I enjoy the film nearly as much as you (a romantic comedy about a self-deprecating, opinionated person who works in publishing and drinks and smokes too much?), but I've often heard the novel itself is rather schematic and...boring.
Chalk up the first to Fielding's admitted Pride and Prejudice hangover, which the book blatantly borrows from. But even after several revisits, I still laugh my ass off, and her calculated build-ups to character reveals, (both minor and major), and Bridget's public humiliations get me every time.
It's also a product of its time ('95, if I remember correctly), so the journal-style device is certainly dated and tired, but it's still very entertaining material.

Truth?
Schematic? Yes.
Boring? Hardly.
